First Lines Fridays – 26th September 2025

Welcome to entry #6 for First Lines Fridays! Every week (or whenever the mood strikes), Iโ€™ll be sharing the opening line of a bookโ€”no title, no authorโ€”just the first sentence that sets the whole story in motion.

First Lines Fridays is a weekly post hosted by Wandering Words. In this post instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines.

To do this simply:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

First lines:

Sometimes I feel like my hometown of Briar Glen is just showing off. I can’t tear my eyes away from a brilliant maple tree right outside my classroom window.

Do you recognise what line this book is from?

Okay, here’s a hint for you… it’s a YA romance.

Still unsure? Here’s your last hint… it’s written by Kate Cicatelli-Kuc.

Keep scrolling down for the BIG REVEAL!

Fall is a big deal in Briar Glen, a quaint and charming village in New England. Thatโ€™s when tourists from all over the country descend upon this picturesque town to see the babbling brooks and colourful leaves while sipping hot chocolate or pumpkin spice lattes.

But sixteen-year-old Lucy Kane hates the uber-popular PSL. She finds it overrated — especially when you consider the fact that there isnโ€™t even pumpkin in it! — which is bad because she works at Cup oโ€™ Jo, the local coffee shop her mom owns. Business at Cup o’ Jo hasn’t been great in the off-season, but that’s okay because it always picks up during the fall …

Until Java Junction, a multinational coffee chain, opens across the street and makes things harder for the small shop. And to make matters worse, it turns out Jack Harper, the new kid in school and Lucy’s secret crush, is the son of the owner. Suddenly, fall doesnt seem like it’ll be all it’s cracked up to be. Will Lucy find a way to save her mom’s coffee shop?

[Did you guess right?]
