Book Review
I looked for more romance books to read in February and decided to carry on with the books in the Improbable Meet-Cute: Second Chances series. I’ve not read from Hannah Bonam-Young before so I thought I’d try out her writing with a cute little novella. Because I have Amazon Prime, the eBook was included, so I didn’t have to pay for it either.
The book’s short length makes the romance feel very insta-lovely–a trope I don’t usually enjoy–but it worked well for this type of book. I enjoyed the main characters overall and feel they suited each other well. This short novella has a nice balance of being character-driven and plot-driven.
The story develops most of the relationship through the main characters being pen pals via email. I like how the FMC who’s a history teacher was sharing this with her students as part of a history project. The MMC is adorable and I like how it went from communicating via email to having long-distance phone calls. I’m glad the book gives the spice ratings at the start because it’s a very “closed-door” romance. I don’t typically mind this, as I think it fit the story’s vibe. It didn’t need any spice given the storyline.
Pacing was good overall throughout the book but unfortunately the ending felt a little abrupt. This is where I’m going to mention my main complaint. There isn’t a scene of them opening the time capsule together! This was a huge let down for me because the story has the time capsule as the focal point for the meet-cute. It would’ve been heart-warming and emotional to see the families open it together and learn about their grandmothers.
Overall, this is a cute and average romance book. If you’re looking for a quick romance palette cleanser to read between books then I’d give this one a try. After this, I’m definitely intrigued to try a longer Hannah Bonam-Young book so I can get a better sense of their writing.
