• Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid | Book Review

    Book Synopsis:

    Book Review

After seeing all the hype surrounding this series lately, in particular, the Heated Rivalry book, I thought I would give it a try… I haven’t watched the TV series either but I know that a lot of people love it. I feel bad writing this review but I personally don’t understand the hype after reading it. It was just… fine. This is also my first hockey romance book which I would definitely read more. However, this one just didn’t hit the spot for me.

The main thing that put me off was that I think it was too smutty. I like some spice/smut in my books but this was just too much. The book literally starts with a smut scene and for me it was just meh. I much prefer when characters are yearning for each other and it takes like halfway through the book for that to happen. This just felt a bit too insta-lovey which is a trope I don’t mind if done well and this… Well I don’t feel like it fit the plot especially when they are supposed to be enemies.

I really liked both main characters and don’t get me wrong, I didn’t want to put this book down. Out of them both, I preferred Ilya over Shane but I think they were both good characters who brought two different personalities. I was so intrigued with the enemies to lovers trope and wanted to see how it was going to play out. I’ll admit that it took me a while to really feel the connection between them though. I wouldn’t say this book is true enemies to lovers… it’s more just for show with a little bit of disliking each other as they are sport opponents.

The book is split into four main parts as well as there being time jumps throughout which I didn’t really mind. Part one was okay, it was nothing special but a good set up for the story. Part two was interesting as we got to learn a little bit more about each MCs backstory. Part three was quite disappointing as this is where the connection starts to develop between them but nothing really happens… Part four was just… I did not enjoy the abrupt ending and it felt very rushed. The smut scenes at times also felt way too long especially near the end.

I’m glad I’ve read the book to make my own opinion and I am not judging if you absolutely loved it. For me though, it wasn’t quite what I was expecting/hoping for. Overall, if you are someone who enjoys spicy, fast-paced hockey romances then I’d say to pick it up as you will probably enjoy it more than I did.

  • Worst Wingman Ever by Abby Jimenez | Book Review

    Book Synopsis:

    Book Review

After reading a previous novella from Abby Jimenez and really enjoying it, I thought I would give this one a go. Because I have Amazon Prime, the eBook is included, so I didnโ€™t have to pay for it. Win, win! This review is going to be quite short as it has similar vibes to the her other novella I have already reviewed.

The bookโ€™s short length makes the romance feel very insta-loveyโ€”a trope I donโ€™t usually enjoyโ€”but the execution works well for the needs of the plot. The main characters both held my interest from beginning to end but I didn’t feel like they connected as much together as the ones in her previous story. It was still enjoyable nonetheless.

The meet-cute is definitely cute and the MMC is the sweetest but as mentioned, it’s quite insta-lovey. The letters they leave for each other is adorable and build up nicely to the ending.

Friendly trigger warning reminder that this story involves the death of a grandparent in a hospice setting. Since the book is so short, it handles this aspect well without being overbearing. Jimenez was able to put so much depth into such a short story and it had me in my feels.

Overall, this was a lovely, fast-paced, and heartfelt read. If you’re looking for a quick romance palate cleanser with a wholesome meet-cute then I’d definitely suggest giving this one a read. After this, Iโ€™m definitely intrigued to try a full-length novel by Abby Jimenez. I’m just not sure which one…

  • Birthstone Book Covers – May: Emerald

    The rules are simple:

    • Pick 5+ book covers that match the current monthโ€™s Birthstone.
    • HAVE FUN!

Right, lets get onto the book covers that I was able to find from books I’ve read (still own) and books on my TBR. I was only able to find 6 books that are either predominantly green or have green on the cover…

    1. Old Fames and New Fortunes by Sarah Hogle (TBR)
    2. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Read – still own)
    3. The Last Piece of my Heart by Paige Toon (Read – still own)
    4. Almost There by Farrah Rochon (TBR)
    5. Hunted by Meagan Spooner (TBR)
    6. Mate by Ali Hazelwood (TBR)

This was a lot of fun to take part in for May and I’ve already taken a sneak peak for June which I will try to take part in but not sure whether I will combine gemstone colours or focus solely on one…

What emerald books would you recommend? What would you add to the list?

This isnโ€™t just a numbers recapโ€”itโ€™s a snapshot of my reading life so far this year.

January has always been a good month for me in terms of reading, I always seem to read the most in the start of the new year. I read 13 books in January, 9 books in February and 6 books in March!

Through audiobooks I’ve managed to listen to 59 hours and 15 minutes of reading. With my physical and kindle books combined, I’ve managed to read 5386 pages.

    New-t0-me Authors

    5 Star Reads

I haven’t had that many 5 star reads so far this year… I’ve had 3 that were new reads and 2 that were re-reads. The 3 on the top row are all new reads and the 2 on the bottom are my re-reads!

    Monthly Favourites

I like to track my monthly favourites so that throughout the year they can compete against each other to find the #1 at the end of 2026.

    What Fable and StoryGraph say…

It’s clear to see that I have been deep in my romance era for the start of 2026 and I think Fable have summed me up as a reader so far perfectly. My ratings have been all over the place but it’s looking close to a 4 star being my average rating.

How many books did you manage to read during Q1 of 2026?

  • The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah | Book Review

    Book Synopsis:

    Book Review

Iโ€™ve always been interested in books set during World War II… Iโ€™ve had this one on my radar for a long time. I decided to pick it up after hearing what my sister thought about it and seeing reviews on social media. This review will be quite short as I think this book speaks for itselfโ€ฆ

I’ll start with my only few criticisms I have for this book… The first half of this book was quite slow to get through. The chapters are nice and short with lots of action going on to keep you reading. I found some parts a bit of a slog to get through. However, once I passed the halfway mark, the book captivated me. The next criticism is purely personal opinion… I have never been a reader to love overly descriptive books. I will say that Hannah does a beautiful job with her descriptions and the language she uses is almost poetic. However, there were times when it felt a little overkill and unnecessary.

Woven across the awful environment/situation was a story of two very different sisters. The third-person POV for Vianne and Isabelle’s story works really well. It allows us as readers to see their thoughts and feelings whilst keeping a distance between the narrator. I also like how the author included some chapters set years after the war as well. The author told these in the first person, and I enjoyed the mystery of trying to figure out who the older woman was. Is she Vianne or Isabelle? Very cleverly done.

This book is devastating, heart-breaking, powerful, courageous and compelling! There were a lot of moments throughout this book where I was tearing up–not crying like I thought I would–but definitely tear-jerking. I think the only reason that I didn’t cry is because I could tell when emotional things were going to happen. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but these moments felt predictable and sometimes glossed over. They still pulled on my heartstrings nonetheless. Can honestly say this will be a story that will stay with me forever and I’m so glad I finally got around to reading it.

I definitely think this is an important read because it offers deeper insight into what life was like for women during the war. Itโ€™s hard to say whether I would recommend this book due to the nature of it. However, if you find books set during WWII interesting then Iโ€™d suggest giving this one a read.

    Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

  • Second Draft by Kate Leone | ARC Review

    Book Synopsis:

    Book Review

*I received an ARC copy of this book, but all opinions are entirely my own and honest.

I’d never heard of this author before until they reached out to me asking if I wanted to be an ARC reader for their debut novel. The cover is very bold and eye-catching, and the premise is what drew me in. I absolutely love a romance book, so when I saw the tropes, I knew I had to read it… I’m so glad I did!

Considering this is the author’s debut novel, the writing is very strong. Leone does a great job with the characters, and the dialogue doesn’t feel forced between them. The story flows and I liked the chemistry between the main characters. I also liked the addition of the side characters too, particularly Leah!

My only criticism is that the pacing was a little unbalanced throughout the book. It started off slow and then once it reached around the halfway point, the pace picked up and it felt right. However, the ending, especially after the build up to the climax was a little rushed. Personally, I would’ve liked it to be a little slower so that we could see more of the main characters relationship development. I enjoyed the 6 month time jump but I would’ve rather we saw more in between.

I really enjoyed the setting of this book. I’ve only been to Comic-Con once in my life, but Leone was able to capture the atmosphere, excitement and chaos of it brilliantly. It fit the vibes for both of the main characters to be there. Emma is an author promoting her fantasy book and Darren is a movie star promoting his movie there. I also found it was very clever how the author tied in the moments when fiction collides with reality!

I will admit that the connection between the main characters feels very ‘insta-lovey’. Normally I don’t enjoy this trope but it was done well in this book. The romance is definitely a slow burner, and I liked their banter whilst it was blossoming. It was nice to have the FMC doing the hard work to reconcile the relationship instead of it typically being the man. This is because of the third-act breakup. Emma felt very relatable all the way through, and I liked seeing her vulnerable side and being able to tackle her fears. I really liked Darren’s character–reminded me so much of Hook from Once Upon a Time! Be mindful there is 0 spice in this book but there are some lovely kissing scenes when they eventually happen.

I would recommend reading this book if you’re looking for a contemporary romance from a new author. It’s a fun, heartfelt romance with a sprinkling of emotional depth throughout.

    Rating: 4 out of 5.
