Bookish ‘Smash or Pass’ Book Tag

Bookish ‘Smash or Pass’ Book Tag

I saw this book tag recently from Riddhi @ Whispering Stories that was created by Becky’s Book Blog. Who doesn’t love a good smash or pass quiz? I think they’re so much fun and to do a bookish one is genius!!

Bookish Tropes

SMASH! You can’t have a romance or fantasy book without the popular book tropes. There are a few that I would PASS but the majority get a SMASH from me.

Alternating POV

SMASH! I love a book with alternating POV. I get to feel more connected with the characters and understand their perspectives.

Ambiguous Endings

PASS! I need my ending to have clarity and one meaning. I can’t have a book with an ending that keeps me guessing or wondering what the meaning is…

Nonfiction

PASS! I am a fiction girly through and through. I will pick up the odd nonfiction book occasionally if it’s about something that interests me but 99.9% of the time I’m buying/reading fiction books.

Historical Setting/Fiction

PASS! It just doesn’t seem to be a genre that I gravitate towards… unless its set during WWII then I may be intrigued to pick it up.

Morally Grey Characters

SMASH! There isn’t much to say about this one… what’s there not to love?

First Person POV

SMASH! I much prefer first person POV to third person POV. I feel like I can connect more with the character when the story is in first person.

Audiobooks

PASS! I think the idea of an audiobook is great and I’ve tried a few but I struggle to follow along when listening to someone read. I’d much rather be reading with my eyeballs as I feel like I can focus more. I zone out so much when I’m listening to things.

Re-Reading

PASS! I’ve never thought about re-reading books. I like the idea of it but there’s so many books that I want to read that I’d rather prioritise those than re-reading a book I’ve read previously. Plus, I’m always scared I won’t love the book as much as I did the first time I read it.

Classic Novels

PASS! I’ve tried so hard to read classics over the years but I struggle so much with the writing…

Annotating

PASS-ISH! I think I’ve annotated in 3 books total ever but two of them were nonfiction and one was a fiction charity shop purchase. I felt so bad writing in them afterwards… I’m just not drawn to doing it typically. I’ll highlight quotes on my Kindle now but that’s about it.

Cracking Book Spines

PASS! This hurts my heart. I know books are hard to read with an un-cracked spine but I just can’t do it. I feel like I’m hurting them…

Smut

SMASH! I am all up for a bit of smut in my books as long as it has a plot to go along with it.ย I don’t like books with too much smut and not enough plot. There has to be a good balance for me.

Character-Driven Books

SMASH! I’d much rather follow along with the characters than the plot. I feel like I can connect so much more with the characters than I can with a plot.

Past/Present Split Timeline

PASS-ISH! It depends how well the author is able to execute it. I’ve read books with this that have been done well and others which have been bad. I tend to stay clear of them more now.

Heavy World Building

SMASH-ISH! I have only recently started reading books with more heavy world building and I don’t mind it as long as I can still follow along with the characters and plot. I don’t like world building to be too much that it confuses me or makes me feel less immersed because of struggling to follow along.

Do you agree with any of my choices? Or would you have chosen something different for any of the questions mentioned?
