Book Review
As part of my “Amazon Originals” Summer Project, I am reading through short stories published by Amazon. A spin wheel picked them at random, and I ended up with getting the third book in the ‘Obsession’ series. I’d never heard of this author before, so I was intrigued to discover what I thought of their writing. Because I have Amazon Prime, I could read the eBook at no extra cost.
The author tells the story through multiple points of view as the dinner party moves from house to house. I don’t mind when a book has multiple POVs but I didn’t really see the point of it for this story. I guess it was to build up the mystery element but in all honesty, I’d rather it have stayed in the narration of Veronica. Her backstory was interesting and tied into the plot nicely. The other characters were okay to learn about but I don’t think necessarily needed. Due to the change in narration, the book kept good pace throughout and I like how it flashed back so we could see the events unfold.
I thought the plot twist was a little lacklustre. Although I guessed it to begin with, there was an element at the end that I didn’t see happening. For a novella, the plot twist was overall okay but left me a little underwhelmed.
This novella could’ve easily been an episode in a mystery/thriller TV series… The writing was nothing revolutionary for this genre but I had a fun time overall, just like I would if I was watching it on TV. I’m glad that a specific character got the ending they wanted and feel like the author did well to round out the book.
I think if you’re after a quick read or if mystery/thriller books are your thing then maybe give this one a go. I had a good time reading this, it was just a very ‘middle of the road’ book. I’m intrigued to see what the rest of this series has to offer… I don’t think I’ll be rushing to read another book from Minka Kent any time soon but I don’t think I’d say no to reading another one from them.
