Book Review
As part of my “Amazon Originals” Summer Project, I am reading through short stories published by Amazon. Β A spin wheel picked them at random, and I ended up with getting the fifth book in the ‘Blaze’ series. I’d not heard of this author before, so I was intrigued to discover what I thought of their writing… Because I have Amazon Prime, the eBook was included, so I didn’t have to pay for it either.
This book combines flashbacks with snippets of present-day interview questions, creating an engaging mixed-media format. I quite like having mixed media in books and considering this is a novella, it was nice to see it included. The present-day interview questions introduced moments from the past, allowing each flashback to expand on what had been mentioned.
I liked Abby as a character and found her story quite interesting. This story highlights the sacrifices people make in pursuit of successful careers and lasting love. In doing so, she told the stories of women, by women, and for women. Although it is a novella, the author does a great job of adding lots of depth to the main character which can sometimes be tricky for short books. By the end, I definitely felt quite empowered!
However, my main issue with the book is that the author leaves many plot points unresolved by the end. I would’ve liked the book to be a little longer as the ending confused me slightly… It is fast-paced and interesting, but the ending leaves too many questions unanswered.
I think if youβre after a quick read or if historical books are your thing then maybe give this one a go. I had a surprisingly decent time overall reading this. Iβm eager to see what the rest of this series has to offer! I donβt think Iβll be rushing to read another book from Melanie Benjamin any time soon but I wouldn’t say no to reading another one from them.
