This post is a bit out there but I wanted to come on and write a post about the school book fair that I hosted for a week from 15-19th September. Since our school hadn’t hosted a book fair since 2014, we decided it was time to organise another one. I absolutely loved a good book fair when I was younger so to be able to host one as the school librarian was a lot of fun 🙂 This was my second time ever hosting a book fair (I hosted my first one at a previous school) and it ended up being more successful than we originally thought.

The reading culture isn’t great across the whole of our school and I think it is predominantly because of the area we are in so we were quite apprehensive with how it was going to go down with the students but we ended up pleasantly surprised.

We ended up selling £327.64 worth of books and I’ve made a ‘Best Sellers, Runners Up and Third Places’ edit to show all the books we sold and how many of each.

From selling all of these books, we managed to get £81.91 to spend on books from the book fair to put into the school library. It was so hard to choose from the books on offer because I wanted to take all of them 🤭 However, after a lot of time I decided to go with the books below.

If you work in a school, why not host your own Scholastic School Book Fair 🙂

I watch an American school librarian on TikTok and she does a “book return game” and has been saying recently how popular five nights at Freddys is in her library too

Oh my goodness, I used to love watching her back when I had TikTok!!! But yes, the kids can’t get enough at the moment 😀

Fantastic update! Reading amongst youth is so important, and seeing your post excites me that a lot more are taking an interest in novels compared to graphic novels.

Working in a school library is what I am currently striving towards. Hosting these kinds of book fairs would give me so much satisfaction. Any tips and tricks? (I am taking a LIT diploma course atm).

Yes I was surprised to see how many novels we sold in comparison to graphic novels… although I do think that the company who makes the book fair is missing out on a lot of sales by not having any manga… the kids would’ve have cleaned the shelves completely if there was some 🙂

I’m not sure how it works in other countries so have a look to see whether you need a library qualification – in the UK I was fortunate to get into my role just from having previous experience teaching in schools. I haven’t had to get a qualification but I do try and do some free courses related to libraries and reading for pleasure in schools 🙂
