Book Synopsis:
Darcy Moore is tired of death. Which would be fine and good … if she wasnโt a Grim Reaper. Determined to outrun her designation as the villain, Darcy decides she wonโt be dragging her next assignment to the underworld. Sheโll be saving him instead.
Unfortunately for Darcy, thereโs a complication in her plan. Guardian Angel Gabriel Aetos doesnโt tolerate threats to his little corner of the world, and a Grim Reaper showing up at his bar is as deadly as it gets. But when he realizes Darcy is not as she seems, Gabriel must decide if he can trust his growing feelings or hold on to his long-standing grudge.
But magic doesnโt come without consequences. And the Department of Hauntings & Spirits will eventually come calling for their missing Reaper.
Book Review
After reading Good Spirits last year and absolutely loving it, I couldn’t wait to dive into the next instalment. Wow! I ended up loving this one just as much as Good Spirits!
Now I haven’t read many books like this before, but I loved the magical realism and paranormal vibes it delivered. I never thought I’d be rooting for an angel and a reaper, but here we are haha!!
I was immediately hooked from the very beginning. The romance kicks off very quickly, and not in the best way, but it slowly starts to develop as the book goes on. There’s a little part in the middle where the pace dips slightly, but it doesn’t last too long. As much as I love the main characters, the side character Frank stole my heart (if you’ve read the book, you’ll know why).
This book was a rollercoaster of emotions. Borison did a great job of fleshing out the main characters, and I felt deeply connected to them throughout. Everything in this book had a purpose, and I really loved how it wasn’t just a typical love story between the two of them. I will say that I didn’t cry while reading this one like I did with Good Spirits. However, it definitely pulled on my heartstrings at times. As someone who struggles with anxiety surrounding death, I think Borison did a wonderful job of tackling the concepts of death, grief and the afterlife.
The spooky vibes were off the charts, too! Not only through the descriptions of the Halloween and autumnal activities and the setting, but also through the magical elements running throughout the story. It didn’t feel like too much or too little. It was just right.
I absolutely loved the little Easter eggs from Good Spirits that Borison sprinkled throughout this story. They were a lovely addition and a nice nod to those who have been fans of the series so far. Overall, if you’re going to read any spooky book this season or in the future, I cannot recommend this one enough! I’m so excited to see what the next instalment brings, and I need a title reveal immediately.
