Book Synopsis:
Willkommen, bienvenue and welcome! It’s time for the newly launched musical celebration that is the Eurowide Song Contest, debuting in the unglamorous city of Ermpit in Rottimoldovia at Europe’s most easterly tip. It’s like Eurovision, but it’s not…
Lifelong fanatic and walking Eurovision encyclopaedia, Jemma La Vie is the UK’s first ever buoyant Eurowide hope. Plucked from obscurity, her childhood dreams of taking part in a national song contest have come true as she finds herself standing centre stage, with the hopes of her nation on her proud shoulders.
But in the week leading up to the final, a sinister set of events sees contestants dropping down dead before a single vote has even been cast. There’s something shady going on and it seems it’s not just a few dodgy notes onstage being murdered. Will Jemma actually survive to fly the UK flag at Eurowide on final night or meet her Waterloo? And if she does survive, will there be a douze points in sight?
Book Review
*I was kindly gifted a copy of this book in exchange for taking part in this blog tour, but all opinions remain my own.
When I heard that this was a murder mystery with some comical elements and Eurovision vibes, I knew I had to give this book a read. I enjoy reading murder mysteries and have been a fan of Eurovision for many years.
The main character, Jemma, is our focus for most of the book, but a good murder mystery needs a few chapters to explore other charactersโ backstories and personalities. Itโs important for helping us guess who did it. I also liked that there werenโt too many characters to keep track of, which can get confusing in some mysteries. I feel like we had just the right amount of people.
The pacing overall was good. I liked how the book featured random murders, catching me off guard while I was engrossed in a character’s story. BOOM! A murder happens! It definitely kept me on my toesโsome I saw coming, but others took me by surprise, which I liked.
I absolutely LOVED the Eurovision songs and references that we got throughout the book. Being a fan of Eurovision, it was fun to see which ones I could remember from my past years of watching it. The book cleverly used references and songs as puns, adding to its comedic tone.
The comedy overall was good. I think I’m probably too young to understand some of the references (I’m 28) but there were times when I was giggling. Char and Jemma together… I loved their friendship!. It definitely had a campy ‘Carry On’ film vibe (I remember watching a few of them when I was younger and enjoyed them). This was refreshing to have in a murder mystery. I’ve not read a comedy murder mystery before so this was a nice change to the ones I normally read.
I didnโt expect sexual references or scenarios from the blurb and plot, but they are in the book. It didnโt bother me, and I still enjoyed it, but I wanted to mention it for anyone who might want to know.
I did have a slight inkling on who the perpetrator was towards the end but the twist to go alongside it I had no idea about! This struck a good balance for meโI enjoy trying to figure out who the culprit is in a murder mystery. However, I also like being shocked, and this book had both. Overall, it was a fun time reading this!
